This week’s adventure brought to you by… Greenville! Accompanied by Brighton, two of my cousins, and my brother, we made the 1 hour drive south to do some exploring.  After enjoying some delicious coffee from Methodical Coffee, we took a stroll down the river walk in the bright sunshine.

Waterfalls, beautifully landscaped trails, and a unique foot bridge bring peaceful laziness to the heart of the city.

For lunch we grabbed some amazing local food from Sticky Fingers Ribhouse. Having explored most of the downtown area we could, we looked up some vinyl stores and went record shopping. So hipster of us, I know.

I am learning there are so many fun places to explore around Asheville. I think next week I will head out to Chapin, SC to visit some friends!

Last week’s adventure was a surprise trip to Boston! I really felt like I was supposed to go to the final day of the trial. The official sentencing. So I asked if it would be possible  for me to go and Monday evening they called back with a plane ticket and a hotel! Tuesday morning I was on a plane to Boston.

IMG_0778

I got to spend all of tuesday wandering around. Visiting all my favorite places and seeing some of my favorite people. I spent the afternoon with Nicole and had dinner with Dara. It was a lovely day that ended with a spectacular sunset. (we had tornado warnings, so that probably had something to do with the craziness of the sky, but still amazing)

IMG_0790

Wednesday I spent most of the day in court. Listening to survivor’s statements, the lawyers final words, Tsarnaev even gave a statement, and then the judge’s sentencing. Maybe someday I’ll write about all of that, but this is only about the fun adventure, not the hard, emotional part of it.

IMG_0834

After 6 hours in court, a group of survivors gathered at a restaurant to catch up and wind down from the day’s events. I saw more friends and then spent some more time wandering the city before I had to catch my train in the evening.

IMG_0836

Every time I go to Boston I am reminded how much I love it. Its peaceful beauty, nestled on the harbor, history leaking out of its bricks. It truly is an amazing city. And I am so thankful I got to have a little adventure there last week!

I’m a bit behind because I’ve been busy enjoying the summer. Two weeks ago Brighton and I drove out to Knoxville to explore, visit our family & friends who are on tour, and to see the Story of God show.

We spent most of our time in Old City. There were great old brick buildings, an amazing coffee shop, fun alley ways and a train station that made you feel like you stepped back in time.

IMG_7349

We explored an abandoned train station with huge silo type things. It was super creepy because I was pretty sure homeless people were living in there, but we got some awesome pictures.

IMG_7360

After a morning of exploring, we picked up Kimberly and Elouise and had a delicious lunch at The Tomato Head. We ate quickly so as not to miss the beginning of the show., which was fabulous as usual. We caught up with our famous friends on tour over dinner, said our goodbyes and drove back through the mountains to Asheville during a glorious sunset.

I’ve decided that one day a week I will have an adventure. This week I drove to Black Mountain in a torrential downpour. I mean it started raining when I got there, its not like I planned to go in the rain. Anyway… I drove around the quaint little town, chatted with a girl making pottery, found a cool veterans graveyard, snapped a few pics and drove back home. I would have walked around more, but like I said, pouring. I know, a little anti-climactic, but its such a cute little town, I know I’ll be back to explore when the weather is better.

Next week, Knoxville!

My physical therapist said I should look into seeing a specialist at the Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic. He says it’s not getting better and probably won’t. Nothing’s happening. My toes are useless. They curl up when I walk. Its messing with my spine. Its making my back hurt all the time. He said if it doesn’t change I need to work every day on my core and my strength so that I won’t be wearing things down in the wrong ways.

I think I always thought that it would get better. It would take time but it would eventually end. And him saying this to me just hit me hard I guess. I don’t know. It makes it real again. It makes my pain indefinite. It takes away my light at the end of the tunnel. My hope.

I guess I have thought this whole time if I worked really hard it would get better. If I was patient and dealt with the pain long enough it would eventually subside. And now it seems like it won’t.

Jamie Tworkowski says the sunrise always comes. Every day is new. There is always beauty in pain you just have to find it. I know that is true. But tonight it doesn’t seem like it. Tonight I wish for a life without pain. I cry for my foot that will probably never work properly. My leg that will never run. I don’t know how I can bear this for the rest of my life.

suffering is hard.

I mostly have pain every day. I cry a lot. It’s hard for me to keep a smile on my face all the time. But I know that you are going through something hard too. And your something is different from my something. But if we believe that each day is new. Each day starts with the sunrise. Then we have to believe that there is hope. That there can be beauty from pain and that amidst these struggles and trials there is a light at the end of the tunnel. God can work all things together for good. That doesn’t mean he always makes everything work out great. But it means that He will use every situation. To teach you. To mold you, To shape you into someone more like himself. He is making us more like him. And think of how he suffered.

We don’t need to worry. Each day has enough trouble of its own. So you don’t need to worry about tomorrow. You just do the next right thing. And you do your best. And you work hard. And you never give up. You push on towards the light at the end of that tunnel. Some days will be harder than others. Some days you won’t want to get out of bed. Some days the tears will fall. Some days you will need help and that’s ok. Ask for help. Don’t be so proud. Some days you will need a friend, so call someone. Meet them for coffee or lunch or whatever. Some days are hard. SO hard. I know that. But each day there is a sunrise. Each day starts with hope.

To move on with your life, you must break away from identifying yourself as a victim and transcend this experience by becoming a survivor.
Hayley Rose Horzepa

Victim: A person who tends to blames everyone but themselves for their situation in life. Someone who is always making excuses, their state of mind will lead to their downfall. Because feeling victimized is debilitating, it undermines your ability to do anything about the situation. Victims are rarely successful people.

Survivor: A person whose forte is solutions. They continue to function and prosper in spite of opposition, hardship, setbacks, adversity and affliction.

While victims are often negative, self-absorbed, defensive, unadventurous, and mentally stuck in their situation, survivors focus on making their current situation better. They focus on positives, and overcome circumstances many others could not.
This week I was discussing with a friend how both types of people came out of the bombing. Some people came out of this as strong survivors. They are now thriving, despite their physical limitations and injuries. They are running marathons, climbing rock walls with prosthetic limbs, back at work, changing lives. But there are also many who are stuck in the victim mentality. The victims want everyone to know they were in the bombing. They bring it into every conversation and have not moved past the tragedy. They cling to it as a reason for why their life is now limited. For why they are having a hard time, and as they wallow in their self-pity they are left behind.
Being a survivor is a conscious choice. You choose to keep going when things are hard, you choose to leave your self-pity and misery, you choose to start trying to find the positives. It is a constant uphill battle but, if you can change your mentality, it will change your life for the better. If you subscribe meaning to your disability and share this meaning with others, (that is why I am writing a book) you will not only come out as survivors, you will be victors and you will thrive!

Boston, Bova's, Foodie, J.P. Licks, Pie in the Sky, The Thinking Cup

I am on the plane to Boston and all I’m thinking about is food. It may have something to do with the fact that I didn’t eat lunch, but it probably has more to do with the fact that Boston is one of my most favoritest places to EAT.
I grew up in an Italian/Portuguese family with a love of food and lots of good cooks. You could always expect amazing food at our family gatherings. Boston brings me back to my Italian & Portuguese roots.
The North End hosts an endless array of Italian bakeries, cafes, and restaurants with some of the best pastries you will ever have. I can’t wait to go to Bova’s Bakery and down a lobster tail, a crispy, flaky pastry with a creamy filling. And from there to Mike’s for a chocolate whoopie pie as big as your head. We’ll venture down a little brick alley way to Bricco, a little secret bread shop that only locals know about. Over by Paul reveres house is Limoncello, one of the most delicious Italian restaurants I have ever been to. And then there’s  la famiglia giorgio ….gah their pumpkin ravioli in sage cream sauce melts in your mouth and is one of the most succulent, perfect dishes I have ever had. The Green Dragon Tavern is just outside of the North End towards Quincy Market. It is the tavern where Paul Revere and the other patriots used to meet to discuss strategy on how to defeat the British.
Quincy Market is always a bustling hub with “fast food” restaurant supplying you with clam chowder, lobster bisque, oysters and all thing delicious. I always get lobster bisque in a bread bowl from bisque from Boston Chowda. Yum.
A short walk from there and you can get succulent snow crab at The Barking Crab. Barking crab isn’t that awesome, but I love it for being on the water and for having huge picnic tables, and live music. If you head towards Boston Common, you will run into Jacob Wirth’s and their corn bread is to die for. Sonsie on Newburry is the perfect place to dine on a warm summer night. The whole front of the shop opens and you can enjoy the warm breezes. Po Boy in Newtonville is a bit out-of-the-way but with a cheery owner who will give you free fresh made onion rings and a huge Po Boy sandwich with shrimp and catfish, well, its worth it.
If you need coffee and sweets, head over to The Thinking Cup. A coffee shop using coffee from Portland’s Stumptown roasters and brewed to perfection. A latte with a tulip latte art and a macaron please. The hipster historical decorations of this coffee shop have landed it a spot in one of my favorite coffee shops ever.  On Newburry Street you will find Sweet Cupcakes, and J.P. Licks, best ice cream ever.
For breakfast check out Flour Bakery and have one of Joanne Cheng’s famous sticky buns. Ooey gooey deliciousness.
Au Bon Pain is another favorite breakfast stop with their oatmeal bar and fresh squeezed orange juice. It’s a chain, but its acceptable because it is so good!
If you have time for a little day trip drive about an hour and a half north to Pie in the Sky bakery in York, Maine. Worth the drive. Believe me. They have these coconut blueberry bars that are as big as your face and one of the most heavenly things you will ever sink your teeth into. The pie is about $6 a slice you might skip over it thinking that’s way too much to spend on pie…but I am telling you, buy the whole pie and you will thank me that I just made you spend $40. In fact you will probably want to mail me another $40 because your taste buds will be so happy. Best pie you will ever have.
There’s never enough time in Boston to eat all the good food. Plus it can end up costing a ton of money, but where are your priorities? $50 for new ballet flats? No way. $50 for homemade Italian pastries? Where do I sign? Maybe my priorities are a bit skewed. Maybe this is why i have those extra pounds hanging on for dear life. I have no excuse. I love good food. And if that means I have to work out twice a day to fit into my dress for Laura’s wedding next week, then, so be it. It’s a sacrifice I am willing to make.
I could go on and on. And I could write just as extensive list about any city I have visited. But for today, here are my Boston favorites. Please go up there and try them out!

I’ve been getting calls from the media, and questions from people throughout the day. Even the woman at my rental office asked me if I had heard about the sentencing. I couldn’t decide if I should comment about it or not. Tsarnaev was found guilty of all 30 charges against him. The trial will now move on to decide if he will get life in prison or the death penalty. I hate speaking with the media because they skew everything you say and use it for their own purposes. So I have been formulating my thoughts and present them here as my official opinion on the trial.

Yes, he hurt me and many of my loved ones. Yes, our lives are changed forever and some of us will live in pain the rest of our lives. What he did was wrong and as a consequence he was found guilty of all 30 charges. As for the death penalty, I believe the Bible is true and has many things to say about this situation. I am basing my position on the following verses:

Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

Titus 3:1 be submissive to rulers and authorities

Romans 12:19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

As survivor of these crimes committed by Tsarnaev, I choose to pray for the jury and judges. For the governing authorities. Who have been put in that place of authority by God, the ultimate Judge. I pray that they make the right and just decision. I choose not to seek revenge. I choose to leave him to the wrath, or mercy, of God.
