Every little thing is going to be ok…

Screen Shot 2014-12-14 at 9.58.00 AM

Ruth was so brave. She left her home. Her husband was dead. She followed her mother-in-law to an unknown land and an unknown God. Naomi went home bitter, but Ruth gave up her freedom for Naomi’s future.

“When we have an agenda for God, we can’t see the gifts from God.”

And the story unfolds. Ruth goes with Naomi. She doesn’t know what’s going to happen. But she has faith. She just happens to be in Bethlehem. She ends up at Boaz’s field. He happens to be a kinsman-redeemer for her family. She trusts Naomi & God and puts herself in Boaz’s path. She asks him to marry her. And he does. And she becomes an important woman in the line of Jesus Christ. She never knew this when she followed Naomi. When her future was so uncertain and grim.

“Every little thing is going to be okay because God is working good through every little thing. All that’s happening is happening to make miracles. The mundane is what’s making miracles.”

What is worrying you today? Are you missing the love all around you? Think of things that have happened recently that prove that God is at work in your life.

Joys are always on their way to us. They are always traveling to us through the darkness of the night. There is never a night when they are not coming.

A scarlet lifeline of hope

Rahab

Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 12.44.28 PM

“The secret to the abundant life: to believe that God is where you doubt He can be.”

In Hebrew, the word used to describe Rahab’s cord that she threw out the window to save the spies is tikvah. It means hope. Rahab was a most unlikely person. God used her despite her tainted past, and He made her a part of Jesus’ line.

“No personal choice that muddied your life can ever trump the divine choice to wash your life clean.” This Advent, reach out and grab the cord. Reach out for Jesus. Our scarlet lifeline of hope.

Never Undone

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.26.59 AM

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people” Genesis 50:20

Joseph’s brothers tried to destroy his life. They sold him into slavery and tore up his robe and told their father that he was dead. But God had big plans for Joseph. After many trials, he ends up saving the entire nation.

Do you feel torn to pieces? Do you feel like life is trying to destroy you?

“The places where we’re torn to pieces can be thin places where we touch the peace of God…What was intended to tear you apart, God intends it to set you apart…He intends to turn whatever you’re experiencing now into a gift. You cannot be undone.”

Wow. What powerful words. This chapter really spoke to me. I often feel that since the bombing my life has been torn apart. I get so frustrated with pain, and with this new “normal”. It is so hard to remember that God can use all of this for good. He can turn it around and bring such redemption to this seemingly hopeless situation.

Ann asks: When have you seen God take what was torn and turn it into a gift?

Make a list. Redeem those negative turns. You will begin to look a life a little bit differently.

The stairway of God

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.23.36 AM

Jacob dreams of a stairway to heaven. Sometimes life feels like a stairway. Like going up steps that will never end. “Sometimes you’re just the most tired of trying to be strong.” And you feel like you are always grasping , reaching, striving for that next rung. Always trying to pull yourself closer to God. But this Advent season, its time to change that thinking. We don’t have to climb closer to God, because He came DOWN the ladder to US.

“Jesus doesn’t show you the steps to get to heaven – Jesus is the steps to heaven.”

Think about it. How would your perspective change if you started thinking this way? “When you are wrung out, that is the sign you’ve been reaching for rungs. The work at the very heart of salvation is the work of the very heart of Christmas: simply rest.” God is reaching down to you. “Grace carries you all the way home.”

God has brought me laughter. Genesis 21:6

Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 2.32.53 PM

God fulfilled his promise to Sarah and gave her a son. And Sarah said that God had brought her laughter. She had to wait almost 100 years for a child. But God never fails to fulfill his promises.

“All fear is but the notion that God’s love ends. And His for you never will. So loosen up, because the chains have been loosed, and laugh the laughter of the freed.”

What do you need to let go of? In what ways do you need to loosen up this season? Things are hard. The world is a mess, and there is so much pain, but  “that ache is not the last word for those who believe God. Jesus is. Jesus is the last word, and we rejoice and rejoice and re-joy again because grace is our oxygen now.”

You have as much laughter as you have faith.

Living by faith.

Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 2.13.39 PM

I loved this devotional. Every day it seems to be exactly what I need to hear. This promise is something I have such a hard time believing. I know in my head that God has blessed me far more abundantly than I deserve, but whenever it is said to me “God will bless you” I find my heart scoffing. Saying: yeah right have you seen my life lately? Do you know what’s going on? I feel so far away from blessed today. So this is a promise I need to cling desperately to.

“I will bless you…and you will be a blessing to others.” Genesis 12:2

God promises to bless us. “He will not burden you. He will not break you. He will bless you” Oh how I need this! I need to be reminded that God will not burden or break me. As yesterday’s devotional reminded me, every flood of trouble can make us better or bitter. We can either sink or rise. And today I need to choose better. Rising. Believing in God’s promises of blessings. Even if everything seems so, so hopeless.

“You must feel the fullness of your own pitcher before you trust the pouring out of yourself…Only when you are overwhelmed with the goodness of God can you overflow with the goodness of God to others.”

Today we ask how has God blessed us, and how can we be a blessing to others?

Noah found favor with the Lord. Genesis 6:5-8

Screen Shot 2014-12-03 at 10.52.46 PMGod was so upset at the sinful world that his heart broke. He decides to flood the earth, and wipe everyone out. Except Noah. Noah found favor in God’s eyes, and God decided to spare him.

Today we remember that God feels. He feels with us. He can feel our pain, our joy. “God tied His heart to yours so when you feel pain, He fills with pain.” But for this very reason, we can find favor. “We find favor – only because Christ feels pain.”

“Every flood of trouble remakes the topography of our souls – making us better or biter. Every trouble is a flood, and we can either rise up or sink down…Grace…The way heaven comes down so we can rise.”

Advent day 2, Ann Voskamp, The Greatest Gift

Life begins as a love story.

Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image…

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 11.14.54 AM

“You are made of the dust of this earth, and you are made of the happiness of heaven, and you are flesh and you are spirit, and you are of two worlds longing for the home of forever and Him.”

“No matter your story before, this is your beginning now: you were formed by Love…for love.”

John Calvin says that we should be ravished with wonder. Wonder at our God’s infinite goodness, wisdom and power. Today as the second day of Advent. What ravishes you with wonder? What makes you pause and stand and see?

Be still and know. Love is coming.

1000 Gifts, Ann Voskamp, complaining

Our sermon this week was about complaining. I am a complainer. I know I am. I come from a long line of complainers. That’s no excuse, but when its surrounding you, it’s harder to escape. Complaining is an “acceptable” sin. Meaning, we are immune to it. It doesn’t really bother or convict us. In the world we live in today, we don’t consider complaining a sin. But God does. God says to do EVERYTHING without complaining (Phil 2:14) Complaining is an accusation against God. It is a focus on the one thing we don’t have. And when we do that, we forget all the things that we DO have.

As I have been mulling these things over, one thing David said keeps repeating in my mind; “When you complain, it is impossible for you to see what God is trying to do in your life.” When I complain, I am actually blocking my vision! I CANT see what God is doing through my complaining. How mind-boggling! But it also makes so much sense. If I am too busy being ungrateful for what is going on in my life, why would God present me with something better? In the Old Testament, God actually burned up a whole bunch of people because He was so sick and tired of their complaining! Yipes! You can’t complain AND please God at the same time!

I have been searching and searching for what my next step should be. And I have been begging God to show me what to do. I wonder if my ungrateful and complaining heart has been bouncing back His answers. I wonder, if I stop complaining and start looking for the good in every situation, will I begin to see His will more clearly?  Its hard, let me tell you. Its been 3 days and I am blessed to live with and be surrounded by people who also heard the sermon who have been jumping in as soon as someone starts complaining. “Hey! Complaining!” “Do I hear complaining?” Its great. But man, its hard to stop them from coming out of your mouth. I have to be far more cautious at guarding what is coming out of my mouth.

So hey, what’s the opposite of complaining? Thanksgiving! And how awesome is that, it made me happy to think that by giving thanks more often I can hopefully eventually eliminate complaining. A great book I read about giving thanks is called 1000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp. She goes through her journey from complaining to contentment. It’s such a great book, I highly recommend it. It really motivated me to start my own list of things that I am thankful for: https://cragsandclay.wordpress.com/books/1000-gifts/
It’s obviously not complete, but I try to work on it every day. I know Ann’s site has many ideas and opportunities to help you be creative with thanksgiving: http://onethousandgifts.com/ And, there’s even an app you can get on your iPhone that allows you to list your gifts and even take pictures of them! I just downloaded it so I haven’t had time to play with it yet, but I am excited!

“Run to the cross. Remind yourself of what you deserve, and compare it to what you have been given.” (David Whiting) Ask yourself what is the most common thing that you complain about? And begin to turn it around by giving thanks. God wants to help us look and act more like Jesus, and the obstacles and situations He puts in our path are there to help Him accomplish His goal. It’s up to us how we react to them.
