Never Undone

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.26.59 AM

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people” Genesis 50:20

Joseph’s brothers tried to destroy his life. They sold him into slavery and tore up his robe and told their father that he was dead. But God had big plans for Joseph. After many trials, he ends up saving the entire nation.

Do you feel torn to pieces? Do you feel like life is trying to destroy you?

“The places where we’re torn to pieces can be thin places where we touch the peace of God…What was intended to tear you apart, God intends it to set you apart…He intends to turn whatever you’re experiencing now into a gift. You cannot be undone.”

Wow. What powerful words. This chapter really spoke to me. I often feel that since the bombing my life has been torn apart. I get so frustrated with pain, and with this new “normal”. It is so hard to remember that God can use all of this for good. He can turn it around and bring such redemption to this seemingly hopeless situation.

Ann asks: When have you seen God take what was torn and turn it into a gift?

Make a list. Redeem those negative turns. You will begin to look a life a little bit differently.

The stairway of God

Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 11.23.36 AM

Jacob dreams of a stairway to heaven. Sometimes life feels like a stairway. Like going up steps that will never end. “Sometimes you’re just the most tired of trying to be strong.” And you feel like you are always grasping , reaching, striving for that next rung. Always trying to pull yourself closer to God. But this Advent season, its time to change that thinking. We don’t have to climb closer to God, because He came DOWN the ladder to US.

“Jesus doesn’t show you the steps to get to heaven – Jesus is the steps to heaven.”

Think about it. How would your perspective change if you started thinking this way? “When you are wrung out, that is the sign you’ve been reaching for rungs. The work at the very heart of salvation is the work of the very heart of Christmas: simply rest.” God is reaching down to you. “Grace carries you all the way home.”

God Provides

“It is a thing to name where you live Provision, to name the place you call home “The Lord Will Provide.”

God provided a ram for Abraham when he was about to sacrifice his son, and God will provide for us.

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 11.53.47 PM

I don’t have to perform

God will provide.

I don’t have to produce.

God will provide.

Advent is the time to see the ram in the thicket. God always provides.

God has brought me laughter. Genesis 21:6

Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 2.32.53 PM

God fulfilled his promise to Sarah and gave her a son. And Sarah said that God had brought her laughter. She had to wait almost 100 years for a child. But God never fails to fulfill his promises.

“All fear is but the notion that God’s love ends. And His for you never will. So loosen up, because the chains have been loosed, and laugh the laughter of the freed.”

What do you need to let go of? In what ways do you need to loosen up this season? Things are hard. The world is a mess, and there is so much pain, but  “that ache is not the last word for those who believe God. Jesus is. Jesus is the last word, and we rejoice and rejoice and re-joy again because grace is our oxygen now.”

You have as much laughter as you have faith.

Living by faith.

Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 2.13.39 PM

I loved this devotional. Every day it seems to be exactly what I need to hear. This promise is something I have such a hard time believing. I know in my head that God has blessed me far more abundantly than I deserve, but whenever it is said to me “God will bless you” I find my heart scoffing. Saying: yeah right have you seen my life lately? Do you know what’s going on? I feel so far away from blessed today. So this is a promise I need to cling desperately to.

“I will bless you…and you will be a blessing to others.” Genesis 12:2

God promises to bless us. “He will not burden you. He will not break you. He will bless you” Oh how I need this! I need to be reminded that God will not burden or break me. As yesterday’s devotional reminded me, every flood of trouble can make us better or bitter. We can either sink or rise. And today I need to choose better. Rising. Believing in God’s promises of blessings. Even if everything seems so, so hopeless.

“You must feel the fullness of your own pitcher before you trust the pouring out of yourself…Only when you are overwhelmed with the goodness of God can you overflow with the goodness of God to others.”

Today we ask how has God blessed us, and how can we be a blessing to others?

Noah found favor with the Lord. Genesis 6:5-8

Screen Shot 2014-12-03 at 10.52.46 PMGod was so upset at the sinful world that his heart broke. He decides to flood the earth, and wipe everyone out. Except Noah. Noah found favor in God’s eyes, and God decided to spare him.

Today we remember that God feels. He feels with us. He can feel our pain, our joy. “God tied His heart to yours so when you feel pain, He fills with pain.” But for this very reason, we can find favor. “We find favor – only because Christ feels pain.”

“Every flood of trouble remakes the topography of our souls – making us better or biter. Every trouble is a flood, and we can either rise up or sink down…Grace…The way heaven comes down so we can rise.”

Where are you?

Screen Shot 2014-12-03 at 10.50.55 PM

Genesis 3:6-9 Adam and Even sin and realize they are naked, so they hide from God. God calls to them: “Where are you?”

She points out that this is the very first question God ever asks in the bible. Where are you? In the New Testament the very first question is asked by the wise men. “Where is HE?” Kinda cool right? God is looking for us and we should be looking for him!

“We only find out where we are when we find out where He is.”

God is always looking for us. He is always reaching out for us. He refuses to give up on  us. And today He is calling out to you. “Where are you?”

“Wise men are only wise because they make their priority the seeking of Christ.”

Advent day 2, Ann Voskamp, The Greatest Gift

Life begins as a love story.

Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image…

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 11.14.54 AM

“You are made of the dust of this earth, and you are made of the happiness of heaven, and you are flesh and you are spirit, and you are of two worlds longing for the home of forever and Him.”

“No matter your story before, this is your beginning now: you were formed by Love…for love.”

John Calvin says that we should be ravished with wonder. Wonder at our God’s infinite goodness, wisdom and power. Today as the second day of Advent. What ravishes you with wonder? What makes you pause and stand and see?

Be still and know. Love is coming.

“Advent is made of the moments. This slow unfurling of grace…Each day of Advent, we will actively wait.” Ann Voskamp

Advent means coming. Advent means Jesus is coming. And each day of Advent we turn our gaze to Him, and wait for the beautiful day of his birth.

I’ve had Ann Voskamp’s book The Greatest Gift since last Christmas and have been waiting all year to read it! When the reminder on my phone went off yesterday and said “Get ready for Advent, start reading The Greatest Gift” I was so excited! (yes I set a reminder in my phone a year ago so I wouldn’t forget) Her writing is so beautiful and poetic. I am so excited to dive into this book as Christmas draws near. I will try to blog about it every day so you can experience it also! If you go to her website http://www.tyndale.com/web/greatestgift/ and type in the code JESSE, you can get print outs for an advent tree. Each day is a different little ornament you can hang up on a tree or some branches in a vase. Some way to mark the passing of Advent and the coming of Christ. “Anticipate Christ, and celebrate Christmas, His coming.”

Today’s picture is a stump with a branch coming out of it. From Isaiah 11:1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

In the silence of a midwinter dusk, there is far off in the deeps of it somewhere a sound so faint that for all you can tell it may be only the sound of the silence itself. You hold your breath to listen. You walk up the steps to the front door. The empty windows at either side of it tell you nothing, or almost nothing. For a second you catch a whiff in the air of some fragrance that reminds you of a place you’ve never been and a time you have no words for. You are aware of the beating of your heart. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.

Jamberry nails, Tara James

My friend Tara James recently started selling Jamberry Nails. They are basically nail stickers that adhere to your nails. They have great designs and colors and they last longer than regular nail polish with no chips. I left them on for about 8 days and took pictures every few days to document the progress. I think I need to get better at applying them because I did have a few wrinkles at the tips, but other than that, they look great.

As you can see my normal nail polish is quite chipped but the Jamberry nails still look almost brand new. They aren’t hard to get off, but they did leave my nails feeling a bit rough. I don’t know if I would use them on a regular basis, but they are fun and I love all the different options that they have. They have a lot of fun styles for Christmas! Check out their website: http://www.tarajames.jamberrynails.net

I have some samples to giveaway! Just comment below and 5 lucky people will be sent a free sample!
